Job title: Appointed Committee Member

Organisation: Chemists’ Community Fund, Royal Society of Chemistry

Salary: Voluntary role with reasonable travel expenses, lunch and accommodation, if needed, provided for Committee meeting attendance.

Location: Three meetings per year in London.

Closing date: Monday 23rd August 2021.

Job description

The Chemists’ Community Fund is the benevolent fund for Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) members, their partners and dependants. We are a linked charity to the RSC and the RSC Board of Trustees delegate authority to the Chemists’ Community Fund Committee to shape the work and increase the impact of the Fund, within an agreed framework and budget.

The committee was reconstituted with a wider and more strategic remit in July 2020. As the Fund continues to expand our activity, we are developing our new strategy in 2021-22 and this will enable us to continue to utilise our funds for greater charitable impact for our community.

We currently have a vacancy on the Chemists’ Community Fund Committee for a non-RSC member who has expertise of working within a similar grant making organisation. To ensure that we maintain a balance of knowledge, skills and experiences on the Committee we are currently seeking those who have:

  • Experience working at a strategic level
  • An empathetic understanding of the current issues that may be impacting the wellbeing of individuals and groups within our community, e.g. mental health, financial matters and diversity and inclusion concerns
  • Knowledge of existing support mechanisms available for key audiences such as students, those working in the UK and overseas and to be able to help us identify any gaps in provision
  • The ability to support and challenge the Fund manager and staff
  • Time to commit to the role. (Three full day meetings per year, usually hosted in Burlington House, Piccadilly, London, but currently being held online due to Covid-19 restrictions, as well as a small number of decisions supported via email between meetings)

This may be an attractive professional/personal development opportunity for someone with knowledge and experience of a benevolent fund, to impact the strategic development of another fund as we expand our reach and charitable impact; experiencing a fund from the governance/volunteer “side of the fence”.

We will consider the diversity across the eight Committee members when making appointments for this and another member vacancy.

If you are interested in this role please do contact Anna Dearden, Chemists’ Community Fund Manager and Committee Secretary, by Monday 23rd August 2021. Please include a short biographical statement (500 words maximum) detailing how you meet these knowledge, skills and experience requirements, along with details of why you are interested in this opportunity.

Contact details: If you would like to discuss this vacancy in more detail before application please contact Anna Dearden, to arrange a telephone call.
