Trustee: The Eaton Fund for Artists, Nurses and Gentlewomen

The Eaton Fund is a UK-registered charity, founded in 1954. We provide financial help to women in hardship; and to artists and nurses in need, regardless of their gender. Our beneficiaries live in the UK. The Eaton Fund is currently governed by a Board of five Trustees. We want to welcome a new Trustee to our small and friendly Board.

Role Title: Trustee

Organisation: The Eaton Fund for Artists, Nurses and Gentlewomen

Salary: This is an unpaid role, but reasonable expenses will be covered

Location:  Central London but currently working from home

Who we are:

The Eaton Fund is a UK-registered charity, founded in 1954.  We provide financial help to women in hardship; and to artists and nurses in need, regardless of their gender.   Our beneficiaries live in the UK.  The Eaton Fund is currently governed by a Board of five Trustees.  We want to welcome a new Trustee to our small and friendly Board.  Our website is www.eatonfund.org.uk

The Trustee role:

Eaton Fund Trustees are responsible for directing the affairs of our charity, ensuring that it is solvent, well-run, and delivering charitable outcomes. We are looking for someone who can:

  • Work with colleagues to monitor and review the work of the Eaton Fund and develop policies, strategy and plans to ensure the charity’s effectiveness
  • Contribute to our monthly grant assessment process  
  • Participate in Trustees’ meetings (currently 6 per year).  In normal times meetings are held on in central London, but we are using Zoom at present.
  • Attend occasional Eaton Fund meetings which may be held to discuss strategy
  • Be reasonably available for consultation (by email or phone) by other Trustees and the manager
  • Take part in training and development opportunities as need and opportunity arise, which may mean attending conferences in London or elsewhere in the UK

Essential skills:

Above all, Trustees are expected to be committed to the purpose of the Eaton Fund, which is providing help our beneficiaries: women, nurses and artists in need. In practice, this means you will demonstrate:

  • A commitment to ensure the Eaton Fund is well-run
  • Interpersonal skills to work with a small group of Trustees to reach sound decisions
  • Commitment to attend our meetings
  • Access to a computer and computer skills for communication
  • Willingness to engage with strategic and financial matters

Additional experience:

We are interested to hear from a wide group of candidates. We are particularly interested in people with experience in one or more of the following areas:

  • The not-for-profit sector
  • The social care sector
  • The health sector
  • Supporting women survivors of domestic abuse
  • Partnership working with other organisations
  • Previous experience as a trustee is an advantage

Our commitment to Trustees:

We are keen to support Trustees to develop skills and experience relevant to their Trusteeship. This can include attending training provided by ACO and other organisations in the charity sector.
