Charity News Review: June 2025

Read the latest ACO newsletter with updates from us, our members and the wider charity sector.

Welcome to the June edition.

Hot off the digital presses today is the launch of UK Grantmaking 2025.

Now in its second year, this annual publication provides a comprehensive overview of the grantmaking across all sectors including charities, trusts and foundations, government, and the National Lottery among others.

We’re pleased to partner with 360Giving in the development of the platform – alongside ACF, UK Community Foundations and London Funders – providing commentary relating to the data and findings around grantmaking to individuals. You can view the grantmaking to individuals summary here and our commentary here, which includes a really interesting case study from caba around the data trends they have seen over the last year.

Some of the key findings:

  • Following changes to the Charity Commissions Annual Return in 2024 (around charities’ grantmaking to individuals as well as organisations), this new data has revealed a significant enlargement in overall grants to individuals – from £400m in 2022-23 to over £850m in 2023-24 (from 3,600 organisations);
  • Of the largest 100 organisations providing grants to individuals, support has increased by 9% over the year (from £584m to £638m);
  • In terms of ACO members, we saw a 14% increase in financial support from £145m (2022-23) to £167m (2023-24);
  • Grants were most commonly awarded to individuals/families affected by financial hardship and/or poor mental health;
  • The most common purpose of the grants was for the purchase of furniture and appliances;
  • Where geographical data on location of recipients (by ward) was available, the majority of individuals/families provided support were in the most deprived areas (by index of multiple deprivation);

In addition to UKGrantmaking, 360Giving continues to provide a powerful resource for charities to publish their grants data – promoting both transparency to their stakeholders and a strong tool to analyse and benchmark their data against other publishers. If you haven’t considered the potential benefits of publishing your grants data previously, do consider! For further information visit here.
